OH NO!!! >w<

OMG >w<
Well, this was a real upsetting surprise....

I have heard from several sources that youtube is now removing cover songs from it's site!!! Many have already been taken down (even with disclaimers)....and...well....as making cover songs is my main 'job' on youtube, this worries me quite bit! O.O If they thought I was a big enough offender, I could even have my account deleted! And there's no appeal system as there is no way to actually contact youtube.

But even the removal of one video/cover is terrible...I don't get subscribers everyday just from random searches, I get them because my videos are spread out on thousands of accounts as favorites, featured videos, etc. and that's why people see them...so if I lose a video, it's like losing a very long branch that took a very long time to grow....T-T

I'm stumped...I thought that making covers was perfectly legal as long as I was making no money that that it was all my own performances...but maybe that's breaking a law that I didn't know about. I can see the record company's point of view in this...they lose money if someone makes a cover song that gets more attention than their actual product. It's a valid worry of the record company, and a valid worry of the whole music biz, as their stock has already dropped considerably in the last 10 years due to readily available CD burners, and nowadays mp3 'sharing' ^w^ As I'm about to (try to) start a career as a recording artist, these very things will soon become valid worries of my own.

But....I believe going after people that make non-profit covers....is attacking the wrong people. However, since this may affect me pretty soon, I have to prepare!

I'll be making a full list of my contacts this week, leaving out no one, and if something bad does happen, I'll be contacting everyone on that list from a new account! T-T

Just a heads up from me...just in case!

*hugs tightly anyone that reads this*

  2. OMG Kate that's horrible >_<
Is that really happening? I hope it's only a rumor T_T
I would also be affected, and every singer/player on youtube :'( How can they do that? We're just helping them to make their songs popular, not stealing their sales xD

Well, if Youtube has really started deleting covers and accounts, I don't think yours will get deleted! *O* They're anime and video games covers, and at least Square-Enix hasn't ever complained about FF osts being in youtube, right? =P

    I hope nothing terrible happens, let's pray~~!!

  3. YouTube are very concerned about copyright.
    Sometimes, they are over concerned.
Maybe you can try something with another video hosting site?

  5. Yeah it worries me too since I'm making Vocaloid cover songs and managed to get some subscribers too. Let's hope they'll give up on this or something. Cover songs have been a main attraction of youtube. At least for me.

  7. Maybe you could find another site to host your covers, and then post the link on Youtube to that site?

  8. I'm not so sure about this, I think it's a rumour. It was on BBC news the other day that there are a lot of artists who are actually very happy about the covers of their songs on YouTube, as it's clear that there's no profit being made. There's even an artist recently (I forget his name) who has made an album with various people he found covering his songs on YT.

It would pretty much kill YT's 'Musicians' area if they got rid of covers... Maybe they're just removing fandubs/copyrighted video/image stuff?

  10. This is definitely a major issue. One of my favorite cover artists-turned-voice actor, Cristina Vee, had her entire account removed, and she was definitely one of the best fandubbers on Youtube.

I've just discovered your gorgeous music only recently, but I'd hate to see it go! I hope you let us all know what happens, if anything. =\

  12. I hope YT doesn't take down your work. Your covers are quite wonderful, and should definitely be allowed to be shared with others. If things don't go well, I'm sure you will find some other outlet to showcase your talents, and I'm sure your fans will follow. I've no doubt that you'll continue to garner more fans. Talent such as yours seldom goes unnoticed =]

  13. Covers should count as an original work of art, especially yours. You put your blood, sweat and tears into singing it and recording it, and then they go "LOLNO" because its a cover.

Technically, you do own your cover of Aeriths Theme. The backsong is owned by Sqaure Enix, but because you added your own touch to it, it should count as yours.

This all seems so screwed up.

  14. So there was actually news about this? I had no idea-but I had one of my cover songs removed two weeks ago. (Pokemon) I worry about it a lot. I never meant to violate a copyright on anything. T___T

I hope they don't remove your covers-especially since you made all the instrumentals yourself!
